Hi I’m Matt and I’m the 2017-8 Freshers’ Rep. I’m a first year studying Classics and Oriental Studies (Arabic) (yes it’s super weird I know) and I’m from the frozen heartland of Newcastle. Outside of work, I row probably too much and play netball: basically I look for any excuse to wear my dashing swan leggings. Most importantly, I’m a fresher – an important aspect of the job of Freshers’ Rep.
This year, I’ll be representing the newest cohort of Hughsies to enter the college and supporting them as best I can, be that to make sure their concerns are heard, help resolve any issues, or potentially just organise a few more dirty nights out for us all beyond freshers’ week.
Perhaps more importantly I’ll be taking care of next year’s Freshers as they start to find their feet in university life for the first time. With the rest of my sub-committee, I’ll put together welcome packs to be sent out containing all of the necessary information on college life before they come and filled with the kind of love that only St Hugh’s College, notorious for its loveliness, can provide. Beyond my own support, I’ll oversee the college parenting system to ensure that all entrants are contacted and welcomed by the current first years to make them feel even more home here at Hugh’s. The biggest task for us though will be to organise Freshers’ Week, a tough time for Freshers, and make it as welcoming and fun as possible with hopefully something for everyone to throw themselves into!
Whether you’re a current fresher with a worry, or a new one coming into college, you can contact me here, on social media, or even pop over for a brew from my extensive range of teas!
